UPDATE: Power restored to rural areas following outage

OLIVER PAIPOONGE, Ont. - Power has been restored to a dozen rural communities following an outage that lasted nearly eight hours for some customers. 

A power outage was first reported Sunday morning in Oliver Paipoonge just after 7:30 a.m.

By early afternoon, Hydro One said several other areas were also affected, including Scoble, Crooks, Oliver Paipoonge, Pardee, Hardwick, Gillies, O’Connor, Pearson, Blake, Strange, Lybster, and Marks. As a result, 1,668 customers were without power.

The reason for the outage was listed as material failure and crews completed repairs as of 4:30 p.m.

The outage came during an extreme cold warning, with temperatures sitting at -28 C but feeling like -39 C with the windchill.
