THUNDER BAY – The president of Unifor Local 1075 is hopeful sustained talks will keep Bombardier workers off the picket line.

Dominic Pasqualino said the company and the union’s negotiating team have been meeting quite regularly, including five times last week as well as Monday.

“We’re still talking and that’s a good sign,” Pasqualino said after the most recent session.

“(Discussions) are going well at this point. Hopefully we’ll continue at this pace and hopefully in a couple of weeks we’ll have some solution.”

The progress is a good sign for both sides, especially after the general membership gave leadership the authority to stop work if necessary.

In May the membership gave union brass the green light to pursue a strike if negotiations are unsatisfactory. It has been reported that 100 per cent of the skilled-trades workers and more than 99 per cent of the general membership provided authorization.

Pasqualino said it is still early and that a deal is not imminent.

The negotiations are usually a lengthy process, he added.

The most recent collective bargaining agreement expired on May 31.
