THUNDER BAY — It took until the evening to happen, but the last official day of spring saw a new high temperature record established in Thunder Bay.

Environment Canada says the thermometer reached 34.1 C at Thunder Bay Airport at around 8 p.m. Monday.

The temperature shot up by 11 degrees between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. after the wind shifted from the east to the southwest.

After the previous record of 31 C was shattered, a rapid 10-degree cooldown occurred in the following hour.

New all-time highs were also set in a number of other Northwestern Ontario communities on Monday, including Upsala (35.4), Dryden, (34.8) and Ear Falls (34.3).

Meteorologist Steven Flisfeder says the new mark in Upsala is particularly notable because the previous record was a full six degrees lower.

There's potential for another record to be established in Thunder Bay for June 21, with a forecast high of 32.

The current mark is 31 degrees.
