THUNDER BAY -- City police have identified the woman charged in a serious early morning assault on the city's south side Wednesday.

Thunder Bay Police Service officials say an officer on routine patrol in the May and George streets area observed a 30-year-old woman standing over a 40-year-old woman and striking her in the head with what appeared to be a pipe wrench just after 1:30 a.m.

The officer tackled the woman and arrested her.

In a news release issued to media just after 3 p.m. Thunder Bay Police Service officials confirmed Chanel Finlayson, 30, had appeared in court Wednesday and officially charged with a count of aggravated assault.

The accused has been remanded to custody.

The condition of the victim remains unknown at this time, but police say she was sent to the hospital.
