THUNDER BAY -- More than 150 local animals have found new homes.
Those were the results of the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society's recent adoption drive. But it's not all good news as the effort came at a high financial cost to the organization.
Back in September Humane Society officials announced they'd be waiving the $75 adoption fee on all cats in their care, as the Rosslyn Road facility had far exceeded its healthy capacity for the animals.
The adoption drive ended earlier this week with 123 cats being successfully adopted during the six-week drive. Another 29 dogs also found new homes during that time period.
Those numbers are well above the norm. Executive Director Marryann Kleynendorst is grateful for all the community support, but admits the organization lost thousands of dollars during that time.
The Humane Society still has about 60 cats in its care - that's about the facility's capacity.
The shelter is open to the public seven days a week, from noon to 5 p.m.
