Age friendly charter now on display at city hall

Thunder Bay isn’t perfect when it comes to being age friendly, but some councilors say it is well on its way.

Coun. Rebecca Johnson chairs the age friendly steering committee, which presented a senior’s charter to mayor Keith Hobbs Friday morning. Johnson said the charter, which will hang at city hall, shows what the city has accomplished since being designated as age-friendly by the World Health Organization last year.

While she thinks the city has always been age friendly, making Thunder Bay an accessible and safe place for seniors was never an emphasis before.

“We’ve made some accomplishments for the senior population in our community,” she said.

Transportation, housing, safety and getting seniors more involved in the community are just a few of the areas that will be addressed through the charter and the age friendly committee.

“It’s more of a guideline,” Johnson said of the charter.

Johnson said there is still a lot of work to be done though.

”We know that seniors do not feel safe in our own community I think some of that is perception but it’s a reality for them,” she said.
