THUNDER BAY – Coun. Albert Aiello will seek reelection in the McIntyre Ward, becoming the fifth incumbent on Thunder Bay’s city council to announce for the Oct. 24 municipal election.

Aiello, first elected in 2018, filed his nomination papers with the city clerk’s office on Friday. Nominations will be confirmed by the clerk shortly after the Aug. 19 filing deadline.

Until Friday, McIntyre had been the last of the city’s seven wards with no registered candidates. He is so far the only declared candidate.

Aiello, 56, has often been a voice for fiscal restraint in his first term, as well as advocating for restrictions on trucks at the County Fair Plaza and for a Designated Truck Route that would route heavy traffic off Dawson Road.

He said his priorities for a second term would focus on addressing stagnant economic growth and the city's infrastructure deficit.

Aiello has served as the executive director of the Boys & Girls Club since 2001.

One other candidate, Anthony Foglia, filed papers on Friday. He will vie for a trustee position with the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, joining candidates Lawrence Badanai and Matt Pearson.

A list of registered candidates is updated daily by the city at its election website.
