THUNDER BAY - Thunder Bay International Airports Authority have started their live fire training sessions for airport emergency response personnel.
This annual training is mandatory to maintain airport certification, and Thunder Bay Airport is one of the few places in Ontario that hosts these life-like emergencies.
Fortunately, it’s not every day that fire fighters get to put their training to the test and extinguish a live fuel fire engulfing an aircraft.
These real events are few and far between and first responders need a yearly refresher on how it’s done. This training is with fuel fires, and it makes all the difference.
Although the fire fighters aren't training with real aircrafts all the details of the structure that is being set on fire has been carefully thought through.
Some of the fire fighters in this training session have travelled from Sudbury to be here and one of them has been coming to this training session for 12 years straight. He still finds it beneficial because it’s the only real practice he has ever gotten.
Every fire crew that comes to Thunder Bay for training may have specific exercises and protocols that they want to cover.
Iqaluit Airport personnel will be the next clients utilizing the Fire Training facilities offered at Thunder Bay Airport.
