THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Airport is turning to familiar icons to forge its new look.
And they did it in spectacular fashion.
Thursday night’s drone light show at Marina Park opened with a silhouette of Lake Superior and ended with the unveiling of the airport’s new logo.
According to a release issued late Thursday night, the new design was inspired by the region the airport serves, including the boreal forest to Lake Superior to the Northern Lights, it was a tribute to movement and migration.
The change also signals a transformation in how YQT – the airport code for the city – sees itself.
After meeting with collaborators and holding interviews and interest groups, they decided to dive into the natural surroundings of the region, creating a welcoming energy while emboldening the cultural and regional significance of the airport.
“It’s been incredibly meaningful to be part of a re-brand that was so deeply rooted in community input”, said Jackie MacDonald, director, business development and revenue management.
“The new brand is a true Thunder Bay International Airport Authority Inc. reflection of who we are and where we’re headed. It’s a nod to the people who live here, the experiences we share, and the connections we make.”
They've chosen a new, modern logo, inspired by the landscape colour and texture.
The airport’s new motto is ‘Where your stories take flight.'
“This rebranding is more than just a logo change. It reflects our ambition to serve as the true gateway to the region and capture the essence of Northwestern Ontario and the people who make it home,” said Graham Ingham, president and CEO of TBIAA.
“Last year, passenger traffic exceeded 728,000 travellers, and with major investments underway such as expanded parking, and terminal improvements—we’re positioning YQT for long term growth.”
