THUNDER BAY — A 74-year-old man who caught way over the legal limit of walleye is banned from fishing in Ontario for five years, and must pay $10,500 in fines.

The penalties against the resident of South Porcupine were handed down Wednesday by a Justice of the Peace in Thunder Bay.

He was charged last July after a member of the Thunder Bay Police traffic unit initially stopped him for speeding on Dawson Road.

A search of his vehicle also revealed that he had 37 fish over the possession limit.

A joint investigation with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry also found that many of the walleye were frozen in such a way that they could not be easily counted.

All the fish and a cooler were seized and forfeited to the Crown.

When he was apprehended, the man told police he was returning home from a fishing getaway in the Sioux Lookout area.
