THUNDER BAY – The Anglican Church of Canada reversed its narrow rejection of same-sex marriage on Tuesday, attributing the opposition win to a voting error.
The country’s third largest church announced Monday the difference of a single vote meant its lay, clergy and bishops had voted against a proposal to authorize same-sex marriages.
Two of three church orders voted in favour of changing church cannon, but the clergy failed to get the required two-third majority.
On Tuesday, members declared their votes had not been counted and errors were discovered in hard copies of voting records.
"I am thankful that the resolution to allow the blessing of same sex marriages has passed," said Arch-Deacon Deborah Craft, of St. Paul’s Anglican Church in a written statement.
