THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay District Health Unit says another resident of the district has died after contracting COVID-19.

TBDHU on Wednesday morning reported the passing of the 75th person since the pandemic started in March 2020.

Currently, 58 people are hospitalized with the virus, including eight in intensive care.

On Monday, there were 46 hospital cases, with seven in intensive care.

In its latest update, TBDHU reported 137 new cases of COVID-19 across the Thunder Bay district since Monday.

It said the active case count now stands at 287, compared with 310 on Monday.

The percentage of COVID tests coming back positive is trending downward.

Between Jan. 23 and 29, the positivity test rate was 18.4 per cent, compared with 20.6 per cent the previous week.

The week prior to that, it was 23 per cent.

In the Northwestern Health Unit's coverage area, the current positivity test rate is 19.2 per cent.

NWHU reported 249 active high-risk cases in its service area as of Wednesday morning.

Ontario's COVID-19 science panel said Tuesday that the Omicron wave in the province has plateaued or is in decline.

However, it expects that hospital occupancy and pressure on intensive care units will remain in a prolonged peak due to the relaxation of public health measures as of this week.
