Anything can happen on the floor of the Ontario Liberal Leadership convention, says a local MPP.
Bill Mauro (Lib., Thunder Bay - Atikokan) has made it clear he's supporting Sandra Pupatello in her leadership bid. But even though she has the early lead, no-one can predict what will unfold this weekend at the old Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.
Mauro wouldn't disclose who he would support if Pupatello somehow fell out of the race. He only admits that it will be an interesting dynamic on the convention floor.
At the 1996 leadership convention, Dalton McGuinty didn't finish in first place on any of the first four ballots, but then surprised many when he beat Gerard Kennedy on the fifth and final ballot.
Mauro isn't sure whether this could happen again, with Pupatello and Kathleen Wynne being the two front runners. But he says it's hard to predict with so many candidates still in the mix.
The new leader should be determined on Saturday.
Regardless of who wins and takes over the Premier's job, Mauro says he's looking forward to returning to the legislature.
