Dozens of residents of an Algoma Street apartment complex spent a portion of Saturday night in their parking lot as firefighters investigated a strange odour on the building’s third floor.
“We weren’t sure what we were dealing with. The first unit on scene thought it was prudent to evacuate the building, which we did,” said Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue platoon chief John Mill.
“We checked it for carbon monoxide, we checked it for an explosive, both negative. We had the gas company in. They checked it with their equipment and again, it was negative. So now that we know that it’s probably nothing major, we can let the people go back inside.”
Mill said the source of the odour remains a mystery.
“No idea. Somebody could have been cleaning and used a strange solvent. We really don’t know.”
