THUNDER BAY -- A south Neebing arena was evacuated after an ammonia leak Tuesday morning.
Thunder Bay Police Service and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue were on scene at the Thunder Bay Tournament Centre just before 10 a.m. Tuesday after an employee discovered the leak.
Employees were evacuated from the building. Police had Mountain Road blocked off around the arena as a precaution.
“We assembled a hazmat team and entered the building and stared to investigative,” fire chief John Hay said, confirming that there was a leak.
Hay said fire crews stopped the leak but another team had to be sent in to confirm it. Air quality tests will now be done. There’s no estimate on when the arena will reopen.
It’s the second time that an area arena has recently been shut down due to ammonia.
NorWest Arena had an ammonia leak last December.
