THUNDER BAY - A serious three-vehicle collision that closed Arthur Street West for several hours has claimed the life of a 69-year-old woman.

The collision occurred Monday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m. on Arthur Street West just east of Mapleward Road. Based on initial examination of the scene, it appears a vehicle crossed the centre line and resulted in a head-on collision.

Two people were transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, one said to have sustained life-threatening injuries.

According to Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit Acting Sgt. Sal Carchidi, a 69-year-old woman from Atikokan was pronounced dead a short time later.

“Unfortunately, even after efforts made by civilians on scene, Superior North EMS, Thunder Bay Fire, and Thunder Bay Police as well as staff at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, she succumbed to those injuries. The traffic unit is now investigating it as a fatal collision,” he said.

Police said the identity of the woman is being withheld out of respect of the family. The other individual who was transported to hospital was treated and has since been released.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation. There are no charges pending at this time.

“We are not sure if there were any medical episodes leading up to the event or if the collision itself was the cause of her injury,” Carchidi said.

Arthur Street West was closed for most of the day on Monday but reopened to both directions at approximately 5 p.m.
