THUNDER BAY — A Toronto man faces multiple charges as a result of a city police human trafficking investigation.

Thunder Bay police were called to a motel in the city's south end after getting reports of an ongoing assault Monday night after 9:30 p.m.

Officers learned that a male suspect assaulted a female victim, and after investigating further learned that the victim had been allegedly trafficked to Thunder Bay from western Canada. Police believe the suspect was receiving material benefits from the alleged human trafficking activities.

Thunder Bay police arrested and charged 24-year-old Kevin Tyrell Hemmings of Toronto, who is charged with including assault, assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement and two human trafficking related offences.

After appearing in bail court on Tuesday, Hemmings was remanded into police custody.

The charges have yet to be tested in court.
