THUNDER BAY -- The number of people vying for one of five at-large council positions in this fall's municipal election continues to grow.

Mark Figliomeni, You Peng, Marty Rajala and Jim Stadey are all among those who officially filed their candidacy in the race earlier this week, bringing the list of contenders to 15.

As well, Orville Santa, who was elected as a city councillor in 2000 before an unsuccessful mayoral bid three years later, switched to join the at-large race after previously filing in McKellar.

Incumbent Aldo Ruberto will seek re-election and longtime McIntyre representative Trevor Giertgua has registered to seek an at-large position. Three of the incumbents -- Iain Angus, Larry Hebert and Frank Pullia -- are running for mayor. Rebecca Johnson has not yet announced her intentions.

Other challengers who had previously filed include Diane Armstrong, Kim Ducharme, Jim Howie, Chris Krumpholz, Derek W. Lankinen, Tracey MacKinnon, Lori Jean Paras and Jeff Upton

There were 19 contestants in the at-large race in 2014.

The nomination window for municipal election candidates closes on July 27. The election is scheduled for Oct. 22.
