Attawapiskat hospital evacuated after pipe problems

ATTAWAPISKAT, Ont. -- Plumbing problems at a health-care facility on a remote, far North First Nation has led to its evacuation.

ATTAWAPISKAT, Ont. -- Plumbing problems at a health-care facility on a remote, far North First Nation has led to its evacuation.

Officials in Attawapiskat First Nation say they had to evacuate patients of the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority, located within their community, following an issue with a pipe connected to the hospital’s sump.

Material contaminated the crawl space under the hospital after a two-year-old pipe split.

Patients were moved to health-care facilities in Moose Factory, a neighbouring James Bay Coast community that is nearly an hour away by flight.

There is now a temporary ER set up at the ambulance base in Attawapiskat
