Attempted booze theft leads to assault on security guard

Male suspect charged with robbery and assault causing bodily harm after incident at LCBO on Cumberland Street.

THUNDER BAY -- A security guard was taken to hospital after being assaulted by two men attempting to steal from a north side liquor store.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers were called to the LCBO on Cumberland Street Sunday afternoon. The security guard had tried to stop a 45-year-old man and 47-year-old woman for theft as they tried to leave the store without paying for items.

Police said the male suspect resisted and struggled with the security guard before officers arrived.

The 38-year-old security guard was taken to hospital by ambulance. The severity of injuries and condition of the security guard was not released.

The 45-year-old has been charged with robbery and assault causing bodily harm. He appeared in court during the weekend and has been remanded into custody.
