Balancing economy, environment the challenge of Great Lakes conference

The premiers of Quebec and Ontario met with the governors of eight U.S. states in Quebec City Sunday, on the final day of a conference about the future of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence region.

The premiers of Quebec and Ontario met with the governors of eight U.S. states in Quebec City Sunday, on the final day of a conference about the future of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence region.

They're brainstorming ways to protect the region's environment while at the same time encouraging economic growth.

Premier Kathleen Wynne has announced Ontario will sign two new agreements with Ohio and Michigan to combat invasive species and the threat of algae blooms in the Great Lakes.

Wynne has also invited the U.S. states to join Ontario, Quebec and California in a cap-and-trade system aimed at cutting greenhouse gases.
