Baseball diamonds get TLC

The city is on deck for the U-18 Baseball World Cup, but its baseball fields aren't ready just yet. Work crews were buzzing around Baseball Central this week as they work toward being tournament ready.

THUNDER BAY -- With the Under-18 Baseball World Cup on deck, Thunder Bay has started work on the fields at Baseball Central and Port Arthur Stadium.

Thunder Bay is set to host the junior baseball tournament in September 2017.

The city last held the event in 2010, using many of the same facilities, however, a city report filed in June said the city's fields need to be brought back up to standard.

The report said much still needs to be done at Baseball Central, including rebuilding bullpens and pitching pounds, improving field lighting, and installing a new drainage system.

Port Arthur Stadium would require fewer improvements, but still needs improvements to the stadium and dugouts.

While there's no price for the total cost of the improvements, the city has submitted a $200,000 Northern Ontario Heritage Fund application for the work.

Intergovernmental Affairs chair Joe Virdiramo said despite the cost, international events help raise the profile of the region.
