THUNDER BAY - A house on the city’s north side sustained heavy smoke damage after a small fire erupted in the basement.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews were called to reports of a possible dryer fire on Velva Avenue just before 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.
“As soon as we turned onto the block, there was considerably more smoke than we would normally encounter with a dryer fire, so a second alarm was called in,” said Thunder Bay Fire Rescue acting district chief, Rick Kerley.
A fire in the basement was discovered and quickly extinguished by fire crews with water. Two lines were connected to nearby hydrants and the fire was contained to a single room.
“There would appear to be some significant smoke damage, but it would appear fire damage will be limited,” Kerley said.
Kerley added that one person appeared to be home at the time of the fire and called 911 right away and then exited the house. There were no reports of injuries.
A total of six units responded initially, along with an aerial ladder.
