THUNDER BAY – A small crowd rallied Monday morning in a continued effort to stop the spring bear hunt.
The group claims that increased hunting pressure on black bear in Ontario correlates to increased human-bear encounters.
Protesters also say shooting bears in the spring when they are vulnerable, hungry and trying to care for cubs is unethical.
The province opened up the spring hunt to out of province residents, part of a five-year pilot project, in February of this year.
The controversial move came to the delight of hunting outfitters, but reignited the opposition that successfully saw the spring hunt end in 1999.
With only three protesters in attendance, Monday’s rally outside of the Victoria Inn lacked the enthusiasm that previous protests have had.
The 16th Annual American Caribou Workshop was taking place inside the Victoria Inn at the time of the protest.
