THUNDER BAY – Several bear sightings have been reported on Lakehead University campus.

The university issued a security bulletin on Friday, advising people to exercise caution while walking on campus pathways.

“If you encounter a bear, be sure to remain calm, back away, and shout and wave your arms to appear as large as possible,” the advisory warns.

“Do not approach the bear to get a better look.”

Anybody who sees a bear on campus is asked to contact the university security with the location.

“Informing security of these situations will help determine trap locations so bears can be captured and later relocated to more suitable environments,” the bulletin states.

The university is also urging people to follow Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry tips on what to do when encountering a bear and to not provide food.

“They are wild animals and can easily become accustomed to scavenging for food whenever and wherever they are able.”
