After 25 years in First Nations politics, Ontario Regional Chief Stan Beardy has decided to call it a career.

Beardy has announced he will not seek re-election at the All Ontario Chiefs Conference being held next week.

The announcement ends a career that includes 10 years as chief for Muskrat Dam First Nations, 12 years as grand chief with Nishnawbe Aski Nations and three years in his current role as Ontario regional chief.

Beardy says he is making the decision so he can spend more time with his family, and on the lands in which he was raised.

Beardy says he is proud of his accomplishments, such as strengthened accountability and transparency, and a clearer Ontario-wide position on sovereignty and inherent treaty rights.

An election for Beardy's successor is scheduled for Wednesday at the Golden Eagle Casino near Kenora.
