THUNDER BAY – As far as Jodi Belluz is concerned, this has been a good start to spring.

The partner and co-owner of Belluz Farms, which opened this weekend, said conditions are better for early growing than the past couple of years.

“I think we’re excited about having a half decent spring for the first time in a few years. I think with the warmer temperatures we had been having people are excited to get out to their gardens and get some things planted,” she said.

“I think we’re going to have a really great growing season this year.”

Unlike past years, there is no snow left on the grounds for their traditional Mother’s Day weekend opening.

The opening weekend included a petting zoo of newborn animals, scavenger hunts and workshops for children.

“The animals are the big draw for the kids,” she said, adding the workshops have also been a hit. “People are really excited about engaging their kids about growing their own food and their own flowers.”
