THUNDER BAY - Michael Bewcyk, who was convicted of accessing child pornography in 2010, remains in custody after being arrested earlier this week on a charge of breach of a prohibition order - communicating under 16 years.

Bewcyk, 70, made a brief court appearance via video on Thursday in a Thunder Bay Courtroom.

When the crown attorney did not consent to his release, several people in the body of the courtroom clapped. Bewcyk informed the court that he is still trying to secure a lawyer.

Last Sunday, police observed Bewcyk speaking to two young girls, one of whom was riding on Bewcyk's electronic bike without a helmet.

Under a court order, Bewcyk is prohibited from communicating with or being around children younger than 16.

Eight years ago Bewcyk was one of 35 people charge in a child-pornography sweep. He was also charged with fraud of more than $5,000 and impersonation.

Bewcyk will appear by video in a Thunder Bay Courtroom again on Friday.
