THUNDER BAY - A Thunder Bay man who was already convicted of accessing child pornography in 2010 pleaded guilty to multiple charges filed last year and will serve an additional 254 days in custody.
In a Thunder Bay Courtroom on Tuesday, 70-year-old Michael Danial Bewcyk was sentenced to 19 months minus 351 days time served after pleading guilty one count of sexual interference dating back to 1996, one count of possession of child pornography from December 2018, and two counts of breaching a prohibition order from July and August 2018.
Additional charges of abduction of a person under 14-years-old, accessing child pornography, sexual assault, and breach of a prohibition order were withdrawn.
Bewcyk, a former school custodian, was first charged in August 2018 with breaching a prohibition order prohibiting him of communicating with anyone under the age of 16.
Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service observed him speaking with two young girls on Aug. 26. One of the girls was observed riding on his electronic scooter without a helmet.
In September 2018, additional charges were laid, including abduction of a person under the age of 14, as well as sexual assault and sexual interference dating back to 1996. The abduction charge was withdrawn, as well as the sexual assault charge.
Bewcyk pleaded guilty to another charge of breach of a prohibition order charge that was laid by police in October 2018 after a female complainant reported that Bewcyk was observed at Minnesota Park and Art Windall Pool in July 2018.
In December 2018 police executed a search warrant on Bewcyk’s home and he was charged with possession of child pornography, for which he pleaded guilty, and accessing child pornography, which was withdrawn.
Bewyck was also sentenced to three years probation, is subject to a DNA order, a weapons prohibition for 10 years, and a Section 161 prohibition order, which includes prohibiting an offender from communicating with anyone under the age of 16 or being in a location such as parks and swimming pools where persons under the age of 16-years-old may frequent, obtaining employment or volunteering in positions involving persons under 16-years-old, and from using the internet or a digital network unless in accordance with conditions set by the court.
Bewcyk will also be required comply with the National Sex Offender Registry.
In 2010, Bewcyk was convicted of accessing child pornography following a province-wide investigation.
