A local drive to give bicycles to those less fortunate kicked off Friday.

The second annual Bike Round-Up by Bicycles for Humanity Thunder Bay is on at Lakehead University.

From now until April 18, students and staff can drop off old bikes at the LU Bike Shop where they will be fixed up before being shipped off to Namibia.

The African nation has a 50 per cent unemployment rate. The bikes will be used to give people there a mode of transportation.

Bikes that aren’t suited for the African terrain will be fixed up and sold to those in need at an affordable price with proceeds going to charity. Members of the general public are encouraged to drop off bikes as well.
