THUNDER BAY -- At more than $1.5 million raised, a local charity event keeps trying to reach new heights after more than 20 years.
The United Way officially launched its Great Billboard Rescue, now in its 23rd year, Friday morning.
Teams can now call, text and email everyone they know to get financial support before their 20-minute moment on the scissor lift May 14. That's when last-minute pleas will be made in an effort to top the event's usual $150,000 goal.
"It's our largest fundraising initiative of the year," Lowerys' partner Shawn Christie said.
"It's just the community support hat's really important here."
That support allows the United Way to support more than 30 agencies and 64 programs throughout the city.
"We're thrilled to be a part of it and support it," Investor's group regional director Donna Yocom said.
While the event is hoping to continue being oen of the largest fundraisers of the year, organizers are looking for some warm weather after last year's spring chill.
"We're hoping for nice weather this year. Last year was quite cold," Christie said.
But no matter what the weather brings, Yocom said people will no doubt be in good spirits.
