THUNDER BAY -- Birdwatchers across North America became citizen scientists for the Annual Boxing Day Bird Count.
Last year more than 2,500 people took part in Ontario, and groups were out across Thunder Bay Wednesday with binoculars in hand.
There weren't too many birds to be seen at the Friendship Gardens as birders made their rounds with their eyes to the trees. The Annual Bird Count has been taking place in Thunder Bay for more than 70 years now, and this year there 15 groups ventured out in hopes of getting snapshot of the bird population in the city.
Bird count co-ordinator Nick Escott said this year the numbers might be down due to the cold and a lack of food in the wild.
Last year the birders counted more than 46 different species around the city of Thunder Bay.
This year's numbers were not immediately available.
