THUNDER BAY -- Hugo Boisvert is moving on.

After two seasons as the helm of the Lakehead Thunderwolves women's basketball team, the Quebec native is departing the team for an opportunity closer to home and his family.

On Tuesday he was named coach of the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks women's basketball team, according to a release issued by UOIT.

“This was a very difficult decision for me. I have loved my time at Lakehead—the people, the community, and most of all, the student-athletes I had the privilege of coaching. An opportunity came up that felt like the right fit. The chance to be closer to family and friends played a big role in my decision—it's something I just couldn't pass up," Boisvert said in a release issued on Tuesday.

"However, I leave with great memories and deep appreciation. I’m extremely grateful to the department for giving me this opportunity. A heartfelt thank you to my incredible coaching staff—their impact on this program and community cannot be overstated. I also want to thank my student-athletes for their dedication and trust.”

School officials thanked him for his time at the helm.

"On behalf of Lakehead’s Athletics program, we wish to thank Hugo for his dedication, energy, and sincere care that he brought to the role,” said Tom Warden, director of athletics, in a statement.

“Because of his leadership, he leaves the program in a stronger place, and we wish him all the best in the next chapter of his journey.”

Lakehead will begin an immediate and comprehensive search for the next head coach of the women's basketball program.

Boisvert took over the team to start the 2023-24 season and led them to an 11-33 record over two campaigns. He took over the role vacated by Jon Kreiner, the long-time LU coach who agreed to part ways with the team after the 2021-22 season.

Boisvert was hired in January 2023 and took over the reins on June 1 that year. Prior to that he was an assistant coach of the women's basketball team at Laval, a role he served in from 2020 to 2022.
