The new Toronto subway cars being built at Thunder Bay's Bombardier plant will not be going into service until at least February.

The delay was announced this week by the Toronto Transit Commission.

One of the new subway trains for the TCC project was unveiled to the media by politicians in October. Officials with the TTC had hopes that subway riders could start using the trains by late December or early January, but testing is taking longer than expected.

The tests are necessary to make sure the new subway trains are safe for public use.

Bombardier was hired to build the subway cars at its Thunder Bay plant for nearly $1 billion.

The TTC is scheduled to receive a total of 70 trains with six cars apiece. The contract is expected to close in 2013.
