WILLMAR, Minn. – A two-run seventh capped a come-from-behind win Sunday as the Willmar Stingers doubled up the slumping Thunder Bay Border Cats 4-2.
An untimely pair of one-out errors by second baseman Patrick Engskov allowed Luke Williams to reach base and eventually come around to score.
Jack Hines, who reached on the second error, then came home on Kevin Fitzer’s double to centre to put the Stingers up by two.
The Border Cats, who dropped a third straight decision on the road, held leads of 1-0 after three and 2-1 after five.
Engskov’s bat was working just fine.
The first-year Border Cat homered, as did designated hitter Cole Ketzner, producing both Thunder Bay runs.
Droll (0-2) was tagged with the loss, despite only giving up one hit.
Karson Shepherd started for the Border Cats and scattered two hits and two walks over four innings.
Jack Kelley drew the start for the Stingers (13-5) and gave up two runs on four hits and a walk, striking out three. The win went to reliever Kristofer Hokenson, who threw three scoreless innings, with the save going to Ethan Stade, who came on to record the final two outs of the contest, with Peter Fusek standing on first and the tying run at the plate with one out.
The Cats (5-15) return to the friendlier confines of Port Arthur Stadium on Monday night to host the La Crosse Loggers.
