Border closure likely to be extended until Dec. 21.

With case numbers hitting record highs in both countries, it's likely the border, which has been closed to all but essential traffic since March, will continue to be closed for at least another month.

THUNDER BAY -- Black Friday shopping trips to Duluth and Minneapolis will have to wait until 2021.

According to multiple news reports, the federal government is expected to extend the closure of land crossing borders with the United States until Dec. 21. The most recent agreement is set to expire on Saturday.

The border between the two countries has been closed since March, with monthly extensions enacted ever since. Essential workers, and those involved in the transport of goods are still allowed to cross the border. Exemptions are also made to certain family members and loved ones on compassionate grounds.

Flights between the two countries are still a go, but anyone returning to Canada or entering the country by air must self-quarantine for 14 days.

COVID-19 cases are on the rise in both countries. The United States has seen a seven-day average of 150,000 cases, while Canada nearly hit the 5,000 mark earlier this week for a single day, a new record.

Public Safety Minister Bill Blair has not officially confirmed the closure at this time.
