Students at Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute helped Bridge the Gap between youth and seniors Thursday.

Seniors from the community came to the High Street school to mingle with students and see some live entertainment from the youth.

Bridge the Gap used to happen every May at Port Arthur Collegiate Institute but when the school closed in 2007, the event stopped.

But last year SCVI teacher Robert Magnusson thought Superior Collegiate would be a good fit for the event and it was brought back to life.

“A lot (of seniors) were disappointed when it closed and there are some that last year said to me it was so nice to have the program started back up again,” he said.

Magnusson said the event is beneficial to the students because many of them don’t often get the chance to speak and interact with seniors.

“Many of them are disconnected with even their own grandparents. This gives them a chance to see and talk and hear stories and see them outside say a family environment,” he said.

Bridge the Gap is also a great showcase for student talent, he added.

The afternoon saw performances from the Signature Four Quartet, the Superior Vocal class and contestants from High School Idol.

Grade 12 student Alieah Brown said the event was a great way to showcase talent to the elderly community and bring the two age groups together.

“I think now today that we have the Internet and stuff like that, there is a disconnection between grandchildren, grandparents and the elderly and the young. I think it’s good we have things like this to bring everyone as a community together,” she said.

And the students always look forward to performing, she added.

“I know my fellow students enjoy performing despite who they are performing for, so it’s just a fun way to get out there and show your talent in the community,” Brown said.
