Camp Day changes children’s lives by giving them an opportunity they otherwise would not have, says the owner of a local Tim Hortons restaurant.

The national Tim Hortons Camp Day campaign started Wednesday. The annual event raises money to send children away to one of the six Tim Hortons foundations across the country for 10 days.

Christine Youngs, owner of the Tim Hortons at Intercity Mall, said last year Tim Hortons sent more than 14,000 children to camp last year and hoped to send more this year. She said the money is raised from coffee sales and donations given to the restaurant.

"It is a life changing experience for these kids," Youngs said. "They have probably never flown before. At the foundation camps, the kids will learn how to be team members and to challenge themselves to over come fears and make a lot of good friends."

The total amount raised by all the Tim Hortons exceeded $14 million last year.
