MONTREAL – Thunder Bay’s Trevor Letowski’s future with the Montreal Canadiens appears safe for now.
The Canadiens on Wednesday announced they’ve relieved former coach Dominic Ducharme of his duties behind the bench, but the status of Letowski, in his first year as an assistant with Montreal, and the rest of the assistant coaching staff remains unchanged.
The Canadiens named hall-of-famer Martin St. Louis as the team's interim coach.
"We would like to sincerely thank Dominique for his work and contributions to the Montreal Canadiens organization. At this point in the season, we felt it was in the best interest of the club to make a change," said the team’s new general manager Kent Hughes.
Ducharme, who took over the reins last February, led Montreal on a surprising run to the Stanley Cup final, but the team has the worst record in the NHL this season, with an 8-30-7 record.
Letowski was hired by the Habs last summer, after 11 seasons in the Ontario Hockey League. The 44-year-old spent 10 seasons as a player in the NHL, with Phoenix, Vancouver, Columbus and Carolina. He also played two seasons in Russia, retiring in 2010.
