Cancer touches almost everyone.
On Jan. 30 the Canadian Cancer Society is teaming with Thunder Nordic Trails and Kamview Nordic Ski Centre to combat the disease, holding the first Family Snow Day, a fundraiser they hope raises at least $10,000, money that will be directed toward cancer research.
Peter Crooks, manager at Thunder Bay Nordic Trails, said his organization’s membership has been affected by cancer, which is why he’s encouraging as many people as possible to come out and join the fun next Saturday.
“We have a ton of people that walk in the door at the chalet every day that are fighting and/or have beaten cancer. So we’re dedicating this event to them and challenging everyone to come out and put these funds together for the Canadian Cancer Society.”
It’s a first-of-its-kind event, said Maria Cabral, manager of the Northwest Region of the Canadian Cancer Society.
And it’s bound to be plenty of fun.
“The concept is for families to enjoy the beautiful facilities out here and to have their whole family have a great day outdoors, active living and fighting cancer at the same time,” Cabral said on Friday.
“You can either cross-country ski the 2.5- or 5-kilometre trail or you can snowshoe. You can also walk the trail of the snowshoe, if you’d like. We want the whole family to come out.”
Registration fees are $20 per child, $30 for an adult and $75 for a family, up to six people.
“Lunch is included,” she said.
The event runs from noon until 3 p.m.
“We wanted to capture a new demographic of folks, who don’t necessarily participate in our runs or our other fundraising events – our head shaves and all the other things that we do,” Cabral said.
“It’s a really great fit with active living and healthy eating and fighting cancer at the same time.”
