Research shows more than half of all cancers can be successfully treated if detected early, and because of that the Regional Cancer Centre and Northern Cancer Fund want residents to make cancer prevention and screening part of their New Year's resolution.
The groups hosted a community question and answer forum Wednesday night at the Regional Hospital.
Guest speaker Dr. Heather McLean said up to 45 per cent of Canadians will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime, but added there are some basic steps one can take to reduce the risks.
McLean advises people to take their prevention efforts a reasonably healthy day at a time.
She added that while everyone can benefit from undergoing cancer screening, it's particularly important for people older than 50-years-old.
