THUNDER BAY – The vast majority of municipal election hopefuls aren’t ready to play their cards just yet.

Just five candidates had filed in the race as of Tuesday, the day after nominations for the Oct. 24 election officially opened.

The only new entrant Tuesday was Jason Veltri, an LGBTQ advocate who has also been involved in several local political campaigns and chaired the city's anti-racism and equity committee.

Veltri filed to run in the Red River Ward, currently held by Coun. Brian McKinnon.

In a release, Veltri claimed to be the first known openly gay person to seek elected office in Thunder Bay, and said his biggest focus would be supporting the most marginalized in the community.

"I grew up and still live in Red River and having watched our ward grow, change and thrive makes this the perfect place for me to seek public office," he said. "I am running so that my nieces and nephews, as well as future generations, have a place where they can build a meaningful life and contribute to their community.”

Candidates who declared Monday include Bill Dell, Dominic Pasqualino, and Chris Krumpholz in the Northwood ward, and Lori Paras in the McKellar Ward.

Mayor Bill Mauro confirmed earlier this year he intends to seek a second term.

Candidates have until Aug. 19 to file their nomination papers, which won’t be official until certified by the city clerk by Aug. 22.

Residents can track who has filed to run in the municipal election at the city's election website, which will be updated daily.

No candidates had yet filed to run as trustees on the city's four school boards.

Anyone considering running in the election to access the city’s election website for candidates or call the city clerk’s office at (807) 627-3859.
