THUNDER BAY – There’s still no word on whether or not Thunder Bay is in the running for one of the initial 25 brick-and-mortar cannabis stores.

On Friday the Ontario government announced the province-wide cannabis store lottery, awarding Northern Ontario two stores.

But little is known about the winners, one listed as Anton Lucic, the other as Saturninus Partners 423124.

The province also put 20 applicants on a waiting list, in case the two selected were unable to get a store up and running.

Of those 20, 14 appear to be sole proprietors and six are numbered companies.

The winners are allowed to establish storefronts in eligible communities in the Northern Ontario region, government stipulations stating only cities with 50,000 or more people can host a pot store. Each community must also vote whether or not to opt in.

North Bay and Sudbury have already voted to opt in. Thunder Bay is expected to do so on Monday night, while Sault Ste. Marie has yet to make a decision.

Winners have five business days to submit formal applications and must also include a $50,000 letter of credit and a non-refundable $6,000 fee.

In total, 17,000 applicants took part in the Ontario cannabis lottery.

Anyone with information on the two successful applicants is invited to contact our newsroom at [email protected].
