An unidentified person had to be rescued after a vehicle plunged into Lake Superior near the Marina Park band shell Wednesday night.

A pair of firefighters in dry suits, with the help of two lifejacket-wearing police officers, smashed a window in the car and freed the victim, who was taken to hospital with unspecified injuries. After the rescue, members of Thunder Country diving arrived on scene and volunteered to search the submerged vehicle and the surrounding area for other possible victims.

None were found.

Divers hooked a cable to the tow truck and pulled it to shore. An officer on scene said it came out fairly easily.

Police remained on scene attempting to reconstruct the accident, taking measurements and pouring sand where it appears automotive fluids had been spilled.

The entrance to the park was closed as of 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.
