THUNDER BAY – It’s not just about the right now; it’s about what possibilities lie ahead.
Whether it’s a summer co-op, an internship, or a meeting with their future employers this annual fall career fair at Lakehead University is hoping to connect students with a variety of local, regional and national organizations.
Student success advisor Christina Buzzi said it’s a way to open that dialogue and have students meet personally with industry professionals.
“It’s the most powerful type of job search, you know, that face to face talking, asking questions, building a relationship,” Buzzi said.
“It’s really helping them make a connection, expand their network, learn about opportunities and meet people in their field.”
For some students, it’s about feeling informed and for other students, it’s simply about getting acquainted with the opportunities available.
There was something for everyone with 35 employers from around the country representing a variety of sectors from federal, and provincial government departments, forestry and the environment, mining, health care, social services, business to education, engineering and more.
Buzzi says events like these are direct contributors to the high employment rate after graduation.
“It’s hard to measure, but there will be interviews that follow this for a lot of students and we hope it leads to many opportunities.”
This year had record attendance with some teachers letting their student out of class early, so they had the chance to attend the career fair between classes, but it hasn’t just grown with attendance numbers.
Buzzi adds the interest has grown among employers who want to recruit straight from the source.
