THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Caribbean African Multicultural Association is celebrating Black History Month with a gala affair.
The group’s seventh annual Black History Month Dinner and Gala, scheduled for Feb. 25 at the Italian Cultural Centre, will feature dancing and authentic Caribbean cuisine and a fashion show.
“We’ll have our traditional Jamaican jerk chicken that everybody looks forward to seeing,” Atkinson said on Friday, launching this year’s ticket drive.
“We’re looking to add variety to our award ceremony which happens only every now and then. We’re looking forward to amazing recipients this year.”
But more importantly, said organization president Dianna Atkinson, it’s a chance to enhance diversity and racial harmony in Thunder Bay and open their doors to the entire community. It’s also a way to pass along their heritage to younger generations.
“We continue to try to inspire all the youth that means so much. We’d like to acknowledge their heritage, being black in North America and what they do for the city of Thunder Bay,” Atkinson said.
“We’d like to ensure that they continue empowering themselves and ensuring that they’re aware of racial harmony in today’s society.”
Atkinson said all the nominees for the awards are an integral part of the community, who continue to thrive despite challenges they may face.
The event will feature a silent auction and a chance to win a trip for two from WestJet.
Local entertainers will take the stage following the dinner and awards gala.
Tickets are $50 per person.
