THUNDER BAY – Two former University of Ottawa hockey players charged with sexual assault are scheduled to go to trial later this year.

A two-week trial has been scheduled in August for David Foucher and Guillaume Donovan, who each face one count of sexual assault in connection to an alleged incident that occurred in Thunder Bay in February 2014.

The alleged incident occurred on Feb. 2, 2014 at the Victoria Inn involving a 21-year-old female victim when the University of Ottawa hockey team was in the city for a weekend two-game series against the Lakehead Thunderwolves.

A third-party complaint was made later in the month, prompting a Thunder Bay Police Service investigation.

A lengthy investigation, which also involved the Ottawa Police Service and RCMP, was conducted over the following months..

The investigation generated media coverage across the country and prompted the University of Ottawa to suspend the men’s hockey program and fire head coach Real Paiement.

Foucher, now 26, and Donovan, now 25, were charged in August 2014.

Both of the co-accused have opted for the trial to take place in French. At the time of their arrest, police said the two players were from Gatineau, Que.
