The man accused of assaulting pro-life demonstrators by dumping chocolate milk on them may appear in court in August.
Brian Hamilton’s lawyer appeared on his behalf at the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay to push back his case until Aug. 20. Hamilton faces assault charges after an incident involving a Calgary-based group called Canadian Centre for Bio-ethical Reform.
The pro-life demonstrators stopped in town in June as part of a nationwide tour. It’s alleged that Hamilton threw chocolate milk on the demonstrators after he became frustrated with the graphic images they were displaying of aborted fetuses.
Hamilton, who owns the Red Earth and the Bean Fiend, said in an earlier interview with tbnewswatch.com shortly after the incident that he had no regrets.
He said he felt angry when a truck that showed those graphic images drove slowly through the neighbourhood, in plain view of his customers and several young children. He said he tossed eggs and whipped cream at the trucks and told them to leave, but they only parked and then stood on the sidewalk for a peaceful protest.
“I want people to know that I didn’t do this to protest anti-abortion sentiment,” Hamilton told tbnewswatch.com in June.
“I am not wading into that issue. The issue here is 100 per cent the posting of graphic stuff. I’m sure you couldn’t put that on TV. You couldn’t put that on the front page of the newspaper. So why was it here front page in the centre of our community on the day of our big annual sale?”
The incident was caught on video and posted on YouTube. Officials with the group have likened the incident to the struggles faced by Dr. Martin Luther King.
Hamilton will appear in court to be spoken to but his lawyer says the matter is expected to be pushed back again to a later date.
None of the charges have been proven in court.
