The cause of a devastating fire Wednesday in South Gillies will likely remain a mystery.

The fire broke out just before the noon hour on Highway 595 near the corner of Highway 608.  Volunteer fire crews from Gillies, Neebing and O'Connor managed to get the fire under control at about 4 p.m.

Gillies Fire Chief Scott Hole said the damage was too severe, and therefore the cause of the blaze will probably never be determined.

The family, including three children, was not at home at the time.

A passerby managed to get the pets out safely.

Hole says fortunately the family does have fire insurance and they're staying with a friend at this time while they await an estimate on the damage.
