THUNDER BAY - Families will be treated to some old fashioned winter fun this Family Day weekend, courtesy of one of the largest winter gatherings in the region.

Fort William Historical Park will be kicking off Canada’s 150th Anniversary celebrations with the return of its annual Voyageur Winter Carnival on the Family Day Weekend.

“This is the largest winter carnival in all of Northern Ontario,” said Emily Carr, communications officer with Fort William Historical Park. “We’ve got outdoor activities, indoor activities, carnival games, contests, entertainment on site, music, things people can come out and enjoy all weekend long.”

Kids can enjoy tobogganing, sledding, a snow maze, tubing, and skating on the Kaministiquia River. There will also be live entertainment, indoor activities for anyone who wants out of the cold, mini-putt on a snow sculpture course, and a special addition this year.

“New this year, we’re excited to have hover craft rides,” Carr said. “The visitors will be able to experience the Kaministiquia River from a whole new perspective. These hover craft rides can go on ice and snow and will take people down the Kam.”

The all-weather event will be held Feb. 18, 19, and 20. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, students, and youth, and children under five are free. Weekend passes are available.

“People love winter up here and what a better way to come out and experience winter with the whole family and friends than an all in one stop shop at the Fort William Historical Park,” Carr said.
